At the lighthouse site on the southern tip of Öland stands the Långe Jan lighthouse, which with its 41.6 meters and 197 steps is Sweden's tallest lighthouse. The lighthouse was first lit on November 1, 1785 and is located at Ottenby Nature Reserve. The lighthouse is white with a black belt, it was built of stone from a medieval chapel, was whitewashed in 1845 and is today an unmanned, automatic lighthouse.
