In the middle of the sea, southeast of Sandhamn in the Stockholm archipelago, Almagrundet lighthouse stands as a lone sentinel against the treacherous depths of the Baltic Sea. The place where the lighthouse now stands has long been a danger to shipping, and its history is filled with dramatic events.
The name Almagrundet comes from the Norwegian brig Alma, which sank there during a severe storm in 1866. To warn sailors, a lightship was placed at the foundation as early as 1896, but it was replaced several times by new ships with stronger lights and better signals. In 1964, a permanent concrete caisson lighthouse took over - one of Sweden's first of its kind.
Today, Almagrundet Lighthouse stands as an important navigation point in the Stockholm archipelago, a reminder of both the dangers of the sea and human ingenuity.
It is not only a life-saving lighthouse but also a symbol of the rich maritime history of the Swedish archipelago.
