The flag of the Dominican Republic features a white cross dividing it into four rectangles: two blue (top left and bottom right) and two red (top right and bottom left). The national coat of arms appears in the center of the flag.
The Dominican Republic was occupied by Haiti between 1822 and 1844. The country's flag was created by the independence movement and is based on the colors of the Haitian flag. The white cross also symbolizes the country's Christian faith. This religious element is reflected in the coat of arms as well, which includes a Bible opened to the Gospel of John.
