The flag of Vanuatu is horizontally divided into red and green sections, featuring a horizontal yellow Y-shape with arms bordered by black areas; at the hoist, there is a black triangle containing a stylized yellow boar's tusk and two crossed leaves.
During the colonial period, the French Tricolour was flown alongside the British Union Flag. When independent Vanuatu was established in 1980, the national flag was based on the colors used by the pro-independence party, Vanuaaku Pati.
The yellow dividing line forms a Y-shape that represents the geographical layout of the islands.
