South Korea's flag is white with a red-and-blue "taiji" symbol in the center and four black trigrams in the corners.
The South Korean flag came into use during the Joseon Dynasty and was officially adopted as the national flag in 1883.
Following Korea's independence in 1948 and the establishment of the Republic of Korea, the flag, known as the “Taegeukgi”, continued to serve as the country's national symbol.
The flag also became a powerful symbol of the independence movement of 1919.
