The Russian flag is a tricolor featuring the colors white, blue, and red.
The white, blue, and red tricolor originated in the 17th century as Russia's first merchant flag under Peter the Great. It later became the official symbol of the Tsarist empire but was replaced by the Communist Party's red banners following the 1917 revolution. After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, the tricolor was once again raised over Moscow. Today, it serves as the national flag again, having been banned for over seventy years.
