The flag of Papua New Guinea is divided diagonally into a black field and a red field. The lower black field contains five white stars, while the red field features a yellow or golden bird of paradise.
The bird of paradise has long been a national symbol; its feathers are frequently used in traditional attire and ceremonies. The stars symbolize the Southern Cross constellation. They also represent close ties to Australia, which features the same constellation on its flag.
The flag was adopted in 1975 upon the country's independence.
