New Zealand's flag features a dark blue background with the British Union Jack in the upper left corner and four red stars with white borders on the right side.
During the time it was a British colony, the Union Jack was used. The current flag was created and adopted for limited use in 1869 but became the national flag in 1902.
The four stars represent the Southern Cross constellation, though it depicts only the four brightest of the constellation's five stars.
