The flag of Mozambique features three broad horizontal bands in green, black, and yellow, with two narrow white bands flanking the black band. A red isosceles triangle sits against the hoist (the side facing the flagpole), extending over the bands. In the center of the triangle is a yellow five-pointed star with a book at its center; superimposed on the book are a crossed hoe and an AK-47 rifle with a bayonet.
Mozambique's flag is the only one in the world to depict a modern firearm—specifically, an AK-47 rifle. The weapon symbolizes the country's bloody struggle for independence. However, the inclusion of a weapon on the national flag is controversial and divides the nation.
