The flag of Moldova consists of three equal vertical stripes in blue, yellow, and red. The national coat of arms appears in the center of the flag, on the yellow stripe.
According to an official decree from May 1990, the coat of arms is to appear only on the obverse (front) side of the flag, which is unusual for national flags. In practice, however, flags featuring the coat of arms on both sides are also used. Moldova's flag history is closely intertwined with that of neighboring Romania, reflecting the country's political transitions from principality to Soviet republic and, finally, to an independent state.
