The flag of Lesotho is a horizontal tricolor of blue, white, and green, featuring a black traditional straw hat, known as a "mokorotlo", in the center.
The current flag was adopted in 2006 to mark the 40th anniversary of independence. The "mokorotlo" headdress is a national symbol and part of Lesotho’s national costume, even though the straw hat is a relatively recent addition. During the 1950s, political leaders wore the hat to signal their connection to traditional tribal and village hierarchies.
