The flag consists of three horizontal bands in red, white, and black. The white band bears the inscription "Allahu Akbar" ("God is Great") in green Kufic script.
The Iraqi flag has undergone several changes throughout history; the current version was adopted in 2008. It is based on similar flags that served as Iraq's national flags during the 20th century but differs from earlier versions by omitting the three stars in the white band that had appeared on the Iraqi flag since 1963.
