Haiti's flag is divided horizontally into two equal bands of blue (top) and red.
The flag was adopted in its current form in February 1986, and its history is deeply rooted in the struggle against the colonial power of France. According to Haitian tradition, revolutionary leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines created the flag by taking a French tricolor, tearing out the white center, and discarding it. He then asked his goddaughter, Catherine Flon, to sew the remaining bands together.
