Australia's flag is blue and features three distinct elements, the British Union Jack in the canton, four seven-pointed stars and one five-pointed star in the outer half, and a larger, solitary white seven-pointed star in the inner half.
The history of the Australian flag began with a 1901 competition to design a flag for the newly formed nation. A seventh point was added to the Commonwealth Star in 1908 to represent the Australian territories. The basic design, incorporating the Union Jack, the Commonwealth Star, and the Southern Cross, has remained unchanged.
